| If you are looking for software for Syllable Server, go
here.
Binary software packages for Syllable Desktop do not run on Syllable
Server, and the other way around (with the exception of some text
scripts).
The
easiest software packages to install and use on Syllable are
application packages. Applications are graphical programs that you can
use with the mouse. Application packages released by the Syllable project are compressed with the Zip
program and can be unpacked and run anywhere (packages from others may be packed differently). You can do this
from the command prompt by opening the ATerm application and typing the
following
commands.
First unpack the package in a working directory. If you didn't put the package in your home directory, but for
example on the desktop, you should go there:
cd Desktop
Now unpack the package, using
its file name:
unzip
name-version.application
Some
applications are single files, but most larger ones consist of multiple
files in an
application folder.
If you unpacked the package on the desktop, you will be able to see the
new icon of the application on your desktop. If it is a folder, it
should have the same name as
the application. You can open the application by clicking on it. If it
is a single file, this will start the application immediately. If it is
a folder, a File Browser window will
open, in which you should be able to see
the
icon of the application. Clicking on this icon will then start the
application.
You can move the application file or folder
anywhere you
like on any disk that was formatted with the Syllable AFS format. The
folder named "Applications" on your desktop is special, though. If you
drop the application on that icon, the application will be in
the
/Applications/ directory on your disk and will automatically appear in
the Syllable applications menu in the dock bar of your desktop.
